Thrifty NT & Kimberley began as Territory Rent A Car, founded by Brian and Pat Measey in Darwin in 1965. What started with two vehicles, a service bell, and a handwritten ledger has grown into the Northern Territory’s most comprehensive vehicle rental operation – and remains the only major rental company that is fully NT-owned and operated.
Now led by Matt Measey, with co-founder Pat Measey continuing as Director, the business spans 13 locations from Darwin and Alice Springs to Broome and Kununurra. Our fleet of over 1,400 vehicles includes everything from city cars and commercial trucks to the Territory’s largest range of four-wheel drives – all serviced and maintained in-house at our own workshop in Darwin.
We have been here through it all – including staying and rebuilding after Cyclone Tracy in 1974, when many others left. Brian and Pat opened their home to cyclone survivors and reopened the business while Darwin was still picking up the pieces. That resilience, and the deep local knowledge that comes with 60 years in the Territory, is what sets us apart. We know the roads, we know the conditions, and we know the vehicles that handle them best.
